Miyawaki Forest: A special project, a mini urban forest, TAPOVAN, using one of the most effective methods of fast growing green cover was inaugurated on April 17 to celebrate our Club’s 43rd. Charter Day. Around 1000 saplings of indigenous trees were planted on 4000 sq. ft area using the Miyawaki method. Pioneered by Japanese botanist, Miyawaki Akira, the concept is simple, with specially prepared soil and trenches at its core, and planting indigenous varieties of saplings in tight groves, close together, so that, competing for light, the trees grow faster, and jumpstarts the forest creation process. One full grown tree provides 260 pounds of oxygen in a year. Other crucial benefits include lower temperatures, reduced air/noise pollution, return of local birds, and creation of carbon sinks. Once nurtured, a Miyawaki forest is self sustaining, allowing vertical growth and mature ecosystems to develop in 20 years against 200 years for a natural forest. This project has been adopted by our club spearheaded by our member Ms. Kamal Ahluwalia and PDC Sumi Agrawal has been instrumental in procuring the funds, ABC consultants have generously funded the entire project.
